Are you paying too much for gas in Sydney?
In New South Wales, the average annual gas bill in 2023 was $876. And a typical gas home uses 19,978 Megajoules (MJ) each year. You should also know, that unlike electricity where regulations require energy providers to cap prices at a default offer, gas retailers are free to charge what they want. As a consequence, there is a very significant gap between the cheapest and most expensive gas plans available in Sydney.
How much can you save by switching gas providers in Sydney?
According to the Australian Energy Regulator’s 2022-23 Annual report “Savings are available for customers who move.” Average households in Sydney, served by the Jemena gas network, could save $305 per year by switching from the most expensive standing offer to the cheapest market offer*. While most NSW gas households are already on market offers, that’s no guarantee they are on a good deal. Switching from the worst market offer to the very best gas deal would save as much as $291 a year*. So, if you are shopping for the cheapest gas in Sydney, there can be real savings on offer.
